Azmara Asefa Brings Social Responsibility And Technology To The Runway

Phoenix Fashion Week is hosting its 6th annual “Emerging Designer Program” this fall after a 10-city tour in search of the nation's best new talent. Among the 13 design brands chosen, AZMARA ASEFA will be competing for this year’s title of “Designer of the Year.” The program is a 4-month bootcamp that coaches designers on the skills needed to build a successful fashion brand. "The Phoenix Fashion Week BootCamp was created for emerging brands like AZMARA ASEFA to build, launch and sustain their business for long term success. Our team is very proud to have a talented designer like Azmara Asefa represent Los Angeles in her quest to become Designer of the Year 2015," said Brian Hill, Executive Director of Phoenix Fashion Week. The bootcamp ends with a bang during the 3-day Phoenix Fashion Week finale.

Los Angeles brand, AZMARA ASEFA, will be launching its women’s contemporary collection at Phoenix Fashion Week’s Runway show held at Talking Stick Resort on October 3, 2015. Founder, Azmara says, “AZMARA ASEFA is womenswear for the empowered woman who loves peacocking. It’s for the trendsetter and the tastemaker. I equip her with the gear to take on her day in style.” The new collection from AZMARA ASEFA references the founder’s architecture background through silhouette, material, and technology like 3D printing and laser-cutting. “I use the word ‘equip’ intentionally, because my clothes have a utilitarian edge. Another parallel is that it relates to my continued work with the women refugees,” says Azmara.

AZMARA ASEFA has partnered with the Women’s Refugee Commission, a New York based non-profit that focuses on improving the lives of women and children displaced by conflict. Some members of Azmara’s family were refugees so the partnership hits close to home for the brand as well as millions of 1st and 2nd generation Americans across the country.

One of the early adopters to the brand is co-founder of True Religion Jeans, Kym Gold, who selected AZMARA ASEFA as the winner of the Kym Gold Challenge, a competition to design a look for the fashion business maven. Kym says, "I chose Azmara because she showed that she listened to what I wanted. The look is versatile." That is a goal of my design work- to use unconventional silhouettes or materials in a way that makes them versatile for many different wardrobes.
