Chikanbarn.com in association with Sevamob has started offering primary healthcare and accident insurance to Chikankari and Zardozi workers in Kakori. Several women attended the camp and were provided health checks and were also introduced to low cost health insurance and medical benefit packages. Chikanbarn committed to sponsor the premium for a year, for a set of 25 neediest artisans, to help them experience Sevamob’s unique doorstep service and understand and share the benefits in their community.
Explaining the rationale for the partnership, Ashmita Bhatnagar, one of the founders at Chikanbarn, says that since its launch in 2011, we have been trying to understand the ground realities of the artisans who produce such exquisite work often at the cost of their eyesight and health due to illiteracy, overwhelming poverty and deplorable living condition. We find that healthcare could be a key area where we could contribute in a meaningful and sustainable manner, considering the limited resources at our disposal. Sevamob’s unique and low cost offerings and like minded social approach provides a perfect synergy for this initiative.
Shyam Tandon, COO at Sevamob, explains that the partnership offers a great opportunity to make a difference to the lives of the largest and the neediest cluster of women artisans in the world. With most Chikankari workers being freelancers, it is difficult to cover them under any existing corporate or individual plans. Now, with this partnership, we can make a start.
For financing this activity, Chikanbarn’s commitment of 2% of its revenues and Sevamob resources will be utilized. The partners also plan to approach Chikanbarn’s suppliers and other large wholesalers and exporters to join this initiative. Tapping into philanthropic corporates and individuals is also a planned at a later stage. Chikanbarn.com also announced the launch of Chikanbarn Artisans Trust, a charitable trust under the aegis of which these activities would be handled by it.
