Flexible workplace, happy employees earn Ingram Medical the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Award

DRAPER, Utah -- As some companies limit flexibility programs in the workplace, Ingram Medical has received the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility for creating one of the most pleasant working environments in the country.

“There is so much talk about the problems in the economy today but much less talk about bold new solutions. In the eight years that we have been conducting these awards, I have been deeply impressed with the truly innovative solutions these winners have created. They go far beyond having happy and productive employees,” said Ellen Galinsky, president of Families and Work Institute. “The employers who win this award are the best and most innovative in the nation, and they’re reaping the benefits in the success of their companies as they compete in a 24/7 global marketplace.”

According to a press release from Families and Work Institute, “Sloan Awards are part of When Work Works, a research-based initiative to highlight how effective and flexible workplaces can yield positive business results and help employees succeed at work and at home.”

The Salt Lake Chamber congratulated Utah-based Ingram Medical on receiving the 2013 award. The Alfred P. Sloan award was presented to Ingram Medical during a luncheon at Salt Lake Marriott City Center on Oct. 24. Click here to learn more about Ingram Medical.

“We commend [Ingram Medical] on this distinguished national honor,” a Salt Lake Chamber spokesperson said. “[Ingram Medical is] one of 15 winning companies in Utah who scored in the top 20 percent of organizations applying for the national award.”

Since 2010, Ingram Medical has helped diabetics manage their disease by providing quality testing supplies and oral medications, and shipping the materials directly to their homes.

By helping customers maximize their insurance benefits, Ingram Medical also helps diabetics save on out-of-pocket medical costs, Ingram Medical CEO Jeff Smith said.

“Most of our customers are thrilled that they will never have to visit a pharmacy again to replenish their diabetes supplies,” Smith said. “And receiving the Alfred P. Sloan Award tells us that our employees are as happy as our customers. The flexible workplace we provide helps reduce stress and keeps our staff happy and healthy while on the job.”

Recipients of the Sloan awards undergo a rigorous, two-step process that evaluates how the organizations built flexibility programs in the workplace.

In round No. 1, applicants complete a questionnaire that asks about flexibility programs and practices. In round No. 2, employees are asked to complete a 20-minute survey “that asks about their individual use of and experiences with flexibility and other aspects of an effective workplace, the supportiveness of their workplace culture and whether they perceive any negative consequences for using flexibility at their workplace.”

Workplace flexibility programs could include telecommuting, compressed work weeks, more employee control over hours and unlimited time off, Galinsky said.

According to Smith, his employees’ favorite flexibility programs include the daily double shift schedule, which accommodates school and family obligations, the recently established remote sales office accommodating a select group of college students and the ability to work from home for those recent new mothers and those with spouses that have been transferred out of the area.
