MAPLE RIDGE, Canada -- The purpose of the survey is on assessing physical activity levels in school-age children, specifically 5th and 6th grade students so that curriculum can be developed to promote and improve these levels to reduce childhood obesity. Research has shown that, when children enter middle school, due to peer pressure and influence, weight fluctuations occur which can increase their weight or make them bulimic or anorexic affecting their school work, well-being and health. The rationale is to introduce these children to appropriate ways to reduce the influences and pressures as they transition to middle school. The curriculum will tap into linkages between health, environment and technology using interactive applications that are engaging and fun. This is an institutional review board approved study.
We encourage all parents of 5th and 6th grade students to get their wards involved in this. They will be helping in curriculum development as well as working to prevent childhood obesity.
