LASIK eye surgery is an effective method to reduce dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses, but regression or loss of effectiveness during the healing phase has always been a problem in a small minority of patients. Many of these patients will resort back to eyeglasses or undergo a second laser procedure (enhancement).
A Raleigh, NC ophthalmologist, Dr. Dean Dornic of the Laser Eye Center of Carolina has developed a non-surgical method to improve outcomes and reduce the need for enhancement procedures. The method is important because it increases success rates and reduces the need for re-operations.
Dr. Dornic first reported on the use of a prescription eyedrop to reverse regression at the International Society of Refractive Surgeons meeting in 2002. Since that time, several other investigators have confirmed Dornic's findings. Dornic recently reported on his ten years of experience using his technique at the European Society of Ophthalmology meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.
"The discovery of this non-surgical method to improve LASIK outcomes, like many advances in medicine, was somewhat by accident. I have verified the safety and effectiveness of this method in dozens of LASIK patients over the last 10 years. It is an especially rewarding technique because it improves visual outcomes without the need for further surgery," says Dornic.
LASIK eye surgery has been available in the United States for over twenty years. During this time several major innovations have been added to the procedure in an effort to improve outcomes or reduce complications. Dornic's contribution to LASIK eye surgery involves the prescription of eyedrops to treat certain cases of undercorrection. Successful intervention using Dr. Dornic's technique means that some patients may not have to deal with the risks and inconvenience of a second surgery.
Dr. Dean Dornic has been performing LASIK eye surgery in the Raleigh-Durham NC area since 1998. He is an innovator in LASIK and intraocular lens eye surgery. He developed and trademarked the OmniLase technique, a fully customized LASIK procedure that reduces the incidence of several side-effects that can be associated with laser eye surgery. He has published numerous scientific papers, has lectured internationally and has been recognized by both Time and Newsweek as a leader in laser eye surgery.
