HAYMARKET, VA, January 21, 2025 - Robert Warren Button, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Button has dedicated over three decades to the field of defense analysis, with a significant portion of his career spent at the RAND Corporation. As a senior analyst, he has contributed extensively to naval warfare research, focusing on unmanned undersea vehicles and theater security operations. His expertise was sought by the Australian government, for which he developed a concept of operations for Australian submarines operating out of Perth Australia.
Dr. Button's time at the RAND Corporation spanned from 2000 to 2011 and again from 2012 to the present, during which time he authored several publications, including "Concepts of Operations for UAVs," and was recognized with the Survivors Award after his first decade with the organization. His commitment to measuring effectiveness is evident in his support for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, a highlight of his career.
Before his current tenure with the RAND Corporation, Dr. Button served as a researcher at Northrop Grumman Corporation from 2011 until 2012. His analytical skills were honed during the eight years he worked at the Center for Naval Analyses, where he transitioned from academia to defense analysis. This role allowed him to support the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations directly, marking a pivotal point in his professional journey.
Laying a strong foundation for Dr. Button's career achievements was his academic background. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1970, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, obtained in 1975. His entry into the field was serendipitous; while job hunting at a hiring conference, he engaged in a conversation that led him to apply for a position at the Center for Naval Analyses, setting the stage for his future endeavors.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Button is actively involved in civic activities. For three years, he volunteered at a local hospital, assisting with emergency cases. This experience not only enriched his personal life but also underscored his commitment to community service.
Beyond defense analysis, Dr. Button's research interests extend to include biochemistry, particularly aging and Alzheimer's disease. He has explored the role of mitochondria in cellular energy production and their impact on neurodegenerative diseases. His findings suggest that enhancing mitochondrial processing could potentially prevent Alzheimer's disease.
Looking ahead, Dr. Button plans to relocate to Mérida, Mexico, where he aims to improve his Spanish language skills and continue volunteering at local hospitals. His future aspirations reflect his ongoing commitment to personal growth and community engagement.
