JAMUL, Calif. -- “The Last Mustang is a chapter book for kids that faces the ‘what if’ scenario of global warming, and it was inspired by a recent trip to Reno, Nevada, to see the wild mustangs in their now natural habitat,” says author, Penelope Dyan.
Dyan was surprised her book was even noticed by the judges of the young adult category there in Paris, because it’s a book centered in the United States; and although the specific locale in the United States isn’t mentioned, the book was inspired by her visit to see and observe the Wild Mustangs of Reno, Nevada.
“The Last Mustang” is a small chapter book written for preteens and early teens, a sort of niche for author, Dyan who was quite successful with her “Surfer Girl Book Series” as well insofar as receiving widespread literary recognition.
The story is about a mustang, who believes he is the last of his kind, and finds a young girl in a dust storm. Resources are combined and used. The goal? To get to the other side of the mountain, of course . . . to get to the place where the sun goes at night. And there is a surprise ending that will make you smile.
Penelope Dyan is an attorney, an award winning author and a former teacher. Two of her books are on display at the Sasion Poetry Library in London, UK; and her book “Surfer Girl’ is winner of best teen book at both the 2008 New York Book Festival and the 2008 Hollywood Book Festival. “Surfer Girl” is ranked fifth on the AU Pukeke Reading List and is recognized by the Girls Voices In Literature Datatbase, Miami University, Florida. The “Surfer Girl Book Series” is a part of the special surfing books collection at SDSU. Pamela Hillan is a twenty year veteran court reporter which makes a perfect combination for this mystery/adventure series.
“We want to give kids a reason to read,” Weigand says. And there is a video on the Bellissimavideo YouTube Channel that goes along with this book that you can watch at http://youtu.be/sf_C3sKa1n0 ---
