Karl Eduard Goepfart (1859-1942) was a German pianist, composer and conductor. The eldest son of the teacher and cantor Christian Heinrich Goepfart, Karl Goepfart studied both with his father and with Franz Liszt. He toured as a theater conductor in the United States and in Germany. His compositions include several operas, two symphonies, sacred music, and numerous songs.
Goepfart's Zwei Charakterstücke, Op. 27 (Two Character Pieces) were written for oboe and piano and were first published in Leipzig in 1888 by Friedrich Hofmeister. The two contrasting pieces are the very charming I. Mässig schnell, gehend and II. Mässig langsam (in ruhiger Bewegung) with its playful, energetic Lebhaft section. Noteworthy Sheet Music's founder, who plays alto flute, prepared a transcription of this under-appreciated work for herself to try and found it works very well for alto flute. The new version is a simple transposition of the original oboe part for alto flute in G; the two pieces fit nicely into the alto's range and required no octave changes or other adaptations. The edition, complete with a piano score, has been added to NSM's online catalog and is available as a convenient PDF download.
