NYC Admits Millions of Speed Camera Tickets Were Invalid: Class Action Lawsuit

NEW YORK - Feb. 19, 2020 - From April 30, 2013, through the present, the City of New York collected hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue from invalid speed camera tickets. A class action lawsuit filed by attorney Israel Klein, Esq., of the law firm Pardalis & Nohavicka, LLP., alleged that the City was aware that Sections 1180-b(d) and 1180-b(g)(2) of the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law required all issued Notices of Liability for alleged speed camera violations to contain a certificate charging the liability, signed to or affirmed by a technician employed by the City of New York. Nevertheless, the City continued to issue and collect fines for alleged speed camera violations without providing a technician's certificate of liability.

In response to the class action lawsuit, and in an apparent admission of wrongdoing, NYC has recently modified all Notices of Liability for alleged speed camera violations, adding a technician's certificate of liability on the back of the Notices.

The case, Abram Muladzhanov v. The City of New York, Civil Case No. 18-cv-00930, was filed in the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York. The class action lawsuit seeks to recover over $500 million in damages on behalf of all individuals who received a New York City speed camera ticket between August 30, 2013, and the present.
