VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Oct. 28, 2019 - The magical realism, youth climate-action novel, Tying the Leaves, hit number one on Amazon's Hot New Releases for teen and young adult environmental conservation and protection during the same week the book was released.
The child activists in the novel exhibit the real-life determination and passion of the youth groups all over the world that are addressing the climate crisis.
Set in northern Virginia and Washington, DC, the novel follows Jamie, a timid Virginia boy, and his three friends as they time travel seventy years into the future where they are horrified at a barren Earth devastated by climate change and dirty energy pollution. They return to the present and launch an international kids' crusade to save the planet from the same toxic gases that are threatening the life of Jamie's little sister.
Insisting that the U. S. lead the world in changing the future, Jamie and his close pals team up with a maverick U.S. senator on a controversial environmental bill, fight the fossil fuel industry, and counter Washington backroom politics. But things are often not how they seem, and what the youths experience shocks them all.
This magical realism, cli-fi tale tracks an improbable activist as he and his millions of global followers race against time to beat the forces starting to imperil the human race. This is also a story about the power of sibling love and the discovery of a power much greater than that.
The title for the novel was inspired by the song, "I'm Tying the Leaves So They Won't Come Down," which the author's grandfather sang to her when she was a little girl. The song was written by Erasmus Huntington in 1907.
After participating in the first Earth Day in 1970, the author, June Toher, continued to study the benefits of renewable energy and the consequences of burning fossil fuels. Her recent research revealed the particularly harmful effects of these toxic gases on human lungs, especially in children. Her novel demonstrates this impact through the eyes of a child.
Toher also explored clean-energy, cutting-edge technologies from around the globe and the forces obstructing the United States from transitioning to a clean-energy economy. She incorporated her findings into her story.
