It is known that more girls today are attending and completing school, fewer are getting married or becoming mothers while still being children, and more are gaining the skills they need to excel in the future world of work. How this became possible is not known to all. Nearly 25 years ago, some 30,000 women and men from nearly 200 countries arrived in Beijing, China for the Fourth World Conference on Women, determined to recognize the rights of women and girls as human rights.
The conference culminated in the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: the most comprehensive policy agenda for the empowerment of women. In the years following, women pressed this agenda forward, leading global movements on issues ranging from sexual and reproductive health rights to equal pay. On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
Smt Jamuna Mishra Academy JMA was established in the year 2004 at Pilani which is considered as Oasis in the desert state of Rajasthan. For the school which has established a rich tradition of celebrating various days of national and international importance, observing International Day of the Girl Child is much more than a routine. In the state of Rajasthan a coeducational school having more than 40% girls enrolled is much more than mere statistics.
Alumni of JMA Pilani are pursuing higher education in various institutions which include Birla Institute of Technology and Science BITS Pilani which is one of the Institutions of Eminence and Banasthali Vidyapith which is not only in various Quacquarelli Symonds QS Rankings but also in Times Higher Education THE World Rankings as one among the best 3 - 4% global universities and Second Best Women’s University in the world..
On 11 Oct 2019, Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan addressing the students in the school assembly describing the significance of the day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights and read out the message of UN Secretary General António Guterres for the day “"We need to uphold the equal rights, voices and influence of girls in our families, communities and nations. Girls can be powerful agents of change, and nothing should keep them from participating fully in all areas of life."
She also said that the 2019 “GirlForce:: Unscripted and Unstoppable” demands every girl enrolled in JMA Pilani to be a dreamer, performer and achiever. She congratulated the girls Brass Band for bringing laurels in various competitions and also the school girls for coming in a big way to enroll in NCC as well Bharat Scouts and Guides. To encourage the girls to take up STEM – Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics based careers, school organized a visit to globally renowned Birla Science Centre PIlani..
